Funko Pop 07 Green Troll 2020 Emerald City Comic Con LIMITED Edition EXCLUSIVE

Trolls is an American animated media franchise created by DreamWorks Animation, inspired by the successful line of Troll doll toys created by Thomas Dam. The franchise consists of three feature films, Trolls, released in 2016, Trolls World Tour, released in 2020, and Trolls Band Together, released in 2023. The franchise has been supplemented by two holiday television specials titled Trolls Holiday and Trolls: Holiday in Harmony, and two animated series: Trolls: The Beat Goes On! on Netflix, and Trolls: TrollsTopia on Hulu and Peacock.

A troll doll is a type of plastic doll with furry up-combed hair depicting a troll, also known as a Dam doll after their creator Danish woodcutter Thomas Dam. The inspiration came from trolls in old Scandinavian folklore. The toys are also known as good luck trolls. The dolls were first created in the late 1950s, and introduced in 1959, before becoming one of the United States' biggest toy fads in the early 1960s. They became briefly popular again during the 1970s through the 1990s and were copied by several manufacturers under different names. During the 1990s, several video games and a video show were created based on troll dolls. In 2003, the Dam company restored the United States copyrights for the trolls, stopping unlicensed production. In 2005, the Dam company licensed the brand to DIC Entertainment, who attempted to modernize the brand by creating a cartoon under the name Trollz, but the show only lasted one season. In 2013, the brand was bought by DreamWorks Animation, with an animated feature film called Trolls being released in 2016, a sequel being released in 2020, and another sequel released in 2023.

Good Luck Trolls is the name of the classic "Troll dolls" branding. It's one of the two Troll Doll-related brands that DreamWorks Animation has licensing with, the other being "DreamWorks Trolls" which is itself a license within the "Good Luck Trolls" branding. Both brand names form part of the overarching "Trolls" franchise. DreamWorks currently joint-owns copyright licensing with Dam Things owned by Thomas Dam's descendant, Niel Dam. Since Trolls World Tour, the brand name has slowly been expanding to include many new products within the "Good Luck Trolls" branding. Good Luck Trolls remains the flagship property, and DreamWorks not only owns a number of trademarks, but access to the full copyright of "Good Luck Trolls", including 52 related listings.

In 2024, the Good Luck Trolls celebrate their 65th anniversary.
