Thestrals are a fictional species of magical creatures from Harry Potter. They are a race of winged horse with a skeletal body, a face with reptilian features, and large leathery wings that resemble those of a bat. They are very rare and considered dangerous by the British Ministry of Magic. Thestrals were, erroneously, known as omens of doom and aggression by many wizards because they were only visible to those who had witnessed death at least once.

Due to the Thestrals' classification, only experienced wizards should attempt to manipulate Thestrals. Wizards who lived in areas not protected from Muggles were required by law to regularly perform disillusionment spells on their Thestrals. The breeding and possession of these animals was discouraged, even illegal, without the consent of the ministry.
